Timişoara, Romania

CRiSIS 2011 will be held at the Politehnica University in Timişoara, Romania's second largest city, close to the Western border. Timişoara is a city with a multicultural heritage, including Romanians, Hungarians, Germans and Serbs, and a vibrant present. It is home to almost 50.000 students (the hosting university, Politehnica, is the largest and oldest), and has a strong multinational IT and telecommunications industry.

September is still pleasantly warm in Timişoara, so you will be able to enjoy the many parks, strolling along the Bega river, or the open-air terraces in the city's Baroque architectural gem, Unirii (Union) square.

To see and to do

Some suggestions for participants arriving early:

Getting here and around

Timişoara has a well-connected international airport, the second-largest in Romania, with direct flights to some 25 European cities. Several daily flights to major European hubs ensure good connections all over the world: Lufthansa has 3 daily flights to Munich, and Austrian flies twice daily to Vienna. Timişoara is also served by low-cost carrier Wizzair and regional carrier Carpatair, flying to France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.

Romania is a member of the European Union. No visa is needed for citizens of EU/EEA countries, the United States, and Canada, among others.

Taxis are inexpensive, at about 0.40 EUR starting fare + 0.40 EUR/km (more at night and out of town). A taxi from the airport (12 km) should cost around 10 EUR.

Express bus E4 runs hourly between the aiport and the city and takes about 25 minutes. The end stop is at the Bastion, about 5 min. to Union Square, 1 km to city center/Hotel Central, 1.6 km to Hotel Savoy. A ticket is 2.50 lei (about 0.60 EUR) and can be bought at the airport parking office.
Schedules (weekday/weekend timepoints at each stop) and a general route map from the public transit website.
